Creating a (basic) ssApp        Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The following are some basic steps to make an ssApp. (See "Creating an ssApp" for a more detailed tutorial)

1.        Preparation.

    • Create a temporary "build" folder. Any name will do.
    • Copy the installer to the "build" folder.
    • Install the app as you normally would.
    • Right-click the "build" folder and Sendto "SetupS Builder".
    • Important!: Select ssApp "Build Type". This configures "SetupS Builder" for the "what's and how's" of the package to be built.
    • Click Save (Ctrl+S) if desired -- or use the Save button on the Mini-Toolbar. Notice the Install-to Path changes to the %ProgramFiles% variable ;)

2.        "Shortcuts" tab.

    • NOTE: Except for filling out the "shortcut names keep" box, the "Shortcuts" tab is mostly optional.
    • Click the "Default Menu" browse button and navigate to the Startmenu folder created by the app you just installed. If the app did not create a startmenu folder, then Click "Cancel" and use the Shortcut method below. Otherwise, when you find the app's default folder, click "Okay".
    • Notice at this point that some shortcuts are already filled in for you. Since this is an ssApp, this is not required; but they are convenient to have available. Especially if converting to a pppApp.
    • From here select the shortcuts locations/options. Don't forget about the "shortcut names keep" box -- this will be used if the 'KeepAll' Option is not enabled.
    • Pick at least one "Menu Catalog" item for any advanced startmenu -- even if you don't use them others might.
    • Shortcut Method: Click the "Display Name" browse button. Look for any shortcut for this app from such places as the Startmenu, the Desktop, etc.

3.        "Assembly" tab

    • Check that the "Install-to Path" is what is desired.
    • Click Installer browse button and pick the installer you used. Hopefully it'll find the correct silent switches for you. If not, see # below on how to find them.
    • Click save here to see it placed into the Assembly box.

4.        Go back to the "General" tab

    • Finish the rest of the Details -- such as Version, URL's, Category, and Description, etc.

5.        Build!

    • IMPORTANT NOTE: This step is only available if building archive deployment packages (.apz/.pgz). Otherwise, the "Build" folder is complete for the ssWPI (folder) deployment package and no further action is required. Simply proceed to the next steps (Uninstall/Test).
    • Check your Build options. Click MenuBar "Builds" (between "Options" & "Tools") and select how you want you want your builds done.
    • Finally, when you're ready, click "Tools, Build (F5)" -- or click the "Build" button on the Mini-Toolbar.

6.        Uninstall

    • Now uninstall the app. Hint: Use CCleaner for this because after uninstalling simply use its built-in Registry cleaner.

7.        Test

    • To test, simply double click on the .app or .apz file created by ssEditor.
