State Report and Announcements

Postby The Freezer » Tue Aug 30, 2011 5:49 pm

I know this site has been inactive for a while as SetupS was being developed and finalized -- also didn't help any that after switching domain registrars the dns records were a mess (so email was not working for quite a while). But it's all good now and everything including emails are working great.

Anyway, here's what's in store for the future:

  • Update forum software to v3.0.9.
  • In addition to using the resources of LastOS, we've gotten a big increase in bandwidth that will allow for downloads from here as well -- but still limited to only about 100 kbps per transfer thread... oh well, it's a start.
  • Fix QoS/server-load for the site.
  • Dusting off the stalled development of ssGUI (strangely similar to ssWPI only using AutoIt instead) ;)
  • Adding more open-source projects such as a SetupS-related Uninstaller, a Registry Cleaner, and a FAT Sorter.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

I've been, silently, checking in on the site at least a couple times a day, and will continue to do so.

Cheers and Regards

EDIT: Current site reaction time is miserable. (Off and On)

Yeah, that's next. Tweaking the QoS on it and moving some of the load to other servers (mostly heavy p2p traffic on it right now)

The hardest parts were getting everything to work correctly: the forum, emails, and http file-serving, etc.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

So what do you think of the response times now? I'm curious if it's any better or not :)

Just to let you know, overall response is good. At initial load there is sometimes is a delay, but lately, once the site has been loaded, switching between pages seems fairly responsive. So apparently your updates helped.

Cheers and Regards

I've decided to rename the ssTEK ssWPI v9 to ssGooey v8 for several important reasons:

  • WPI stands for Windows Post (or Pre) Installer. But ssGooey will basically be a front-end for SetupS. it can also be used as a pp-launcher. And it'll not be exclusive to Windows either. ;)
    • The development parallels work being done on LastOS's RealBASIC version. The two apps were even sharing the same major version number! -- this is very confusing even to the developers
      • Though the two apps appear similar and ssGooey appears to be a fork of ssWPI, in actuality their goals are very DIFFERENT:
          • ssWPI has a rather long history already and is an on-going effort by a rather talented team at LastOS; whereas, ssGooey has been coded "from scratch".
            • ssWPI is using the commercial RealStudio as its development platform ... ssGooey will be more in tune with the goals of open-source software by using the freeware AutoIt as its development platform instead.

Note: the above two points make it clear that ssGooey is not a fork of ssWPI since they share no code (or even a development platform) in common with each other.
              • LastOS's ssWPI is geared more towards the OS-modder scene and as such carries with it an unwanted association to Warez. ssGooey on the other hand, will be aimed towards general end-users and IT professionals alike.
Hopefully, the renaming and re-versioning will help distinguish the two apps better :)

UPDATE: Hope to have a new preview available soon...

Site's been updated to use "ZB Block" to help fight the recent spam -- and hopefully any future defacement attempts ;)

It's also Open-Source ... so fits in nicely here.

BIG thanks out to BP for finding this!
